In its new summer slot, the Hilo Invitational tees off at 11 a.m. Friday at Hilo Municipal Golf Course with a pro-am.
Traditionally held in the winter, the tournament was canceled last year because of rain. In 2012, four-time champion Nick Mason claimed a rain-shortened 18-hole event.
Mason, a former University of Hawaii at Hilo golfer, returns to defend his title. Other notables in the field include former champion Jarett Hamamoto, TJ Kua, Jared Sawada, Nainoa Calip, Dalen Yamauchi and Chris Igawa.
The 36-hole championship begins Saturday. The pro-am concludes at noon — pros’ scores will count toward stroke play — and the rest of the field goes off at 7 a.m.
Sunday’s round starts at 7 a.m.
